Over 30 years after its initial production, this legendary recording of Heinrich Schütz’s masterpiece is released in digitally remastered form on CD: In 1984, the disc constituted a pioneering effort in the field of historically informed performance practice and was awarded the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis; the complete recording of Schütz’s 29 motets has remained a benchmark recording ever since. The Knabenchor Hannover is heard at its best: directed by Heinz Hennig, the ensemble is joined by renowned soloists such as Bruce Dickey, Charles Toet and Charles Brett, Wilfried Jochens, and (not least) the acclaimed chorister Sebastian Hennig. The recording is unique not just because of its high quality musicianship and the historically appropriate ensemble, which gives an impression of what this piece might (or even must?) once have sounded like, but also because of its bonus features: in addition to the 29 motets, the double disc offers a selection of these motets in ingenious and colourfully arranged alternative scorings.
