Paul Hindemith called him the "last giant in music", referring not only to Max Reger's extensive oeuvre, but also to his significance for music history. In addition to numerous works for organ, piano and orchestra, Reger wrote a large number of works for male choir. In order to make these sound as light and graceful as Reger would have wished, an excellent choir is required: the ensembles Vocapella Limburg and Vox Quadrata under the direction of Tristan Meister, accompanied by the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, know how to perfectly reproduce the spirit of these works.
This recording supplements the complete overview of Reger's works for men's choir with works with orchestral accompaniment, including above all a collection of "Sieben Gesänge für Männerchor und Klavier" (Seven Songs for Men’s Choir and Piano), compiled from Reger's early works - a series of rather shorter, slender songs in a cyclical arc between spring, love, the past and winter hymns and death. The album also includes "Hymne an den Gesang" (Hymn to singing) op. 21, "Die Weihe der Nacht" (Consecration of the Night) op. 119, the orchestral song "An die Hoffnung" (To Hope) op. 124 based on a text by Friedrich Hölderlin and Reger's Roman Triumphgesang (Roman Song of Triumph) op. 126.
