Hof’s city cantors, Georg Stanek and Ludger Stühlmeyer, present the city’s two remaining important historic organs on this CD. Georg Stanek performs works by Vincent Lübeck, Henry Purcell, Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonín Dvo?ak, and Jacques Louis Battmann at the Heidenreich-Organ at St Michael’s. Compositions by Josef Gabriel Rheinberger, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, and Ludger Stühlmeyer were recorded at St Mary’s Steinmeyer-Organ. The recorded pieces take into account the sound facets best suited to the historic organs, and at the same time bring together the Baroque and Romantic eras with contemporary music.

The city of Hof can look back upon an exceptionally long and diverse musical history. Its musico-cultural roots reach back to the Middle Ages. From the churches, their attached Latin schools with their rich tradition of choral music, the city waits, the Convivium Musicum, to the Hofer Symphoniker, the theatre, and the concert series at the city’s two main churches, Hof’s musical landscape of today thrives on the foundations laid by eight centuries of history.
