Christoph Genz

The Erfurt-born tenor Christoph Genz received his first musical training as a member of St Thomas’s Boys Choir in Leipzig. He continued his studies in musicology at King’s College Cambridge where he was also a member of King’s College Choir. He studied voice with Hans-Joachim Beyer and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. Genz was awarded first prizes at the International Singing Competition in Grimsby 1995 and at the International Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Competition in Leipzig one year later. He has been engaged for concerts, recitals and opera productions in Europe, Asia and the USA, working with such distinguished conductors as Ton Koopman, Sir Simon Rattle, Kurt Masur and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. The singer appears regularly at prestigious festivals including the Schubertiade, the Lucerne Festival and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Amongst others, he has given recitals at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Wigmore Hall in London. Under the baton of Herbert Blomstedt he performed Mendelssohn’s Elijah together with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra; further, Genz has sung Bach’s Matthew Passion under Riccardo Chailly with the Gewandhausorchester and Haydn’s Seasons under Sir Roger Norrington in Boston.
