Sophia Maeno

The mezzo-soprano Sophia Maeno was born in Schwerin and studied in Dresden, Rome and Karlsruhe. She is a prize winner of the Yehudi Menuhin Trust ‘Live Music Now’ and the International Association of Wagner Societies. While still a student, she began working with the Stuttgart SWR-Vokalensemble, of which she was a member from 2012 to 2014. In 2014 she was engaged as a soloist at the Mecklenburg State Theatre in Schwerin. Sophia Maeno has been working as a freelance singer since the 2016/17 season. Engagements have taken her to Schwerin as Mrs. Sedley in Peter Grimes and Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, to the Allee Theater Hamburg as Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, to the Theater Erfurt as Pisandro and Giove in Il Ritorno d’Ulisse and the Landestheater Neustrelitz as Arsamene in Xerxes. She will sing the title role in Xerxes at the Landestheater Flensburg in 2022. The young mezzo-soprano performs in oratorios and lied and chamber music concerts throughout Germany. Sophia Maeno has had regular guest engagements at the Chemnitz Opera since 2017, singing roles such as Cherubino, Goffredo and Floßhilde, Octavian and Orlofsky. In the 2021/22 season she makes her debut as Brangäne in Tristan and Isolde and in the title role in Bizet’s Carmen.
