Diego Martin-Etxebarria
Diego Martin-Etxebarria has been Principal Resident Conductor at the Chemnitz Opera since 2020. Born in Bilbao in 1979, he graduated from the University of Music of Catalonia (ESMuC) and completed a postgraduate course in orchestral conducting at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar with a DAAD scholarship. His graduate recital was at the Dresden College of Music Carl Maria von Weber with Ekkehard Klemm and Christian Kluttig. He was artistic director of the Art Ensemble Barcelona and also musical director of the Euskadiko Ikasleen Orkestra and the Akademisches Orchester Freiburg. He has also made guest appearances with numerous orchestras in Japan, Spain, Switzerland and Germany. In 2017 he was appointed Principal Resident Conductor and Deputy Music Director of the Opera Houses in Krefeld Mönchengladbach. Guest engagements have taken him to music theatre productions in Augsburg, Berlin and Spain, among others. Diego Martin-Etxebarria has won multiple awards including first prize at the 17th Tokyo International Music Competition for Conducting. His recording of Enric Morera Zarzuela’s La viola d’or was acclaimed ‘Best Classical CD of 2016’ by critics in Catalonia. In 2020 Sony Classical released a CD with works by Albert Guinovart, which Diego Martin- Etxebarria recorded together with the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya.
