Philharmonisches Orchester des Staatstheaters Cottbus

Philharmonisches Orchester des Staatstheaters Cottbus
The Philharmonisches Orchester des Staatstheaters Cottbus looks back on a century-long history as an opera and concert orchestra. Performances by the theatre’s own orchestra are documented from 1912 onwards. From 2008 to 2018 GMD Evan Alexis Christ has made a distinct mark on the orchestra’s activities. As critics and audiences attest again and again, he has brought the ensemble’s standards to a consistently high level across the wide spectrum from Early Music to contemporary repertoires. Together with the Singakademie Cottbus, the Philharmonisches Orchester performs large-scale choral symphonic works, at the ensemble’s home venue — the Großes Haus of the Staatstheater — as well as churches.

The Philharmonische Konzerte constitute the orchestra’s main venture, giving ample space to music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries alongside works from the canonic repertoire. Guest performers have included exceptional artists such as Sabine Meyer, Tzimon Barto, Viviane Hagner, and the Arditti Quartet. In March 2011, the orchestra was commended by the Deutscher Musikverleger-Verband for the country’s best programming in the 2010/11 season. The ensemble has performed at Winterthur, Berlin, and Paris, as well as at the Festival Musicá Mallorca for the first time in 2014. The orchestra’s repertorial breadth and impressive musicianship are demonstrated on several CD productions from recent years.

The orchestra’s numerous film music concerts show another aspect of their commitment to music of recent decades and the present. They have released a disc with film music by John Williams.
