Born in Horb am Neckar, Markus Flaig studied with Prof. Beata Heuer-Christen in Freiburg and with Prof. Berthold Possemeyer in Frankfurt am Main. In 2004 Markus Flaig won the Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition in Leipzig. With the Ensemble Alta Ripa, he recorded his first solo album featuring cantatas by Bach (BWV 82), Telemann and Graupner for Edition Chrismon. Markus Flaig has appeared in operas by Strauss, Schwehr, Monteverdi, Purcell, and Rameau on the stages of Baden-Baden, Schwetzingen, Bayreuth, Hanover, and Frankfurt. He has also performed in rediscoveries of long-forgotten operas such as Il marito indolente by Mozart‘s contemporary Joseph Schuster and Sardanapalus by Christian Ludwig Boxberg.
