Mendelssohn Kammerorchester Leipzig

Everyone who has experienced this ensemble since its foundation in 1997 – concert audiences and critics alike – has been inspired by its level of expression, homogeneity, and exuberant joy of musicianship. It was the idea of viewing their profession as a vocation that encouraged graduates of the Musikhochschule Leipzig to continue the passionate experiences they had made as members of Germany’s leading youth orchestras in their own professional chamber orchestra, leading them to found the Mendelssohn Kammerorchester Leipzig in 1997.
As a composer, pianist, and conductor, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy had a crucial impact on the musical world of the 19th century. The Mendelssohn Kammerorchester Leipzig understands itself as an expert and ambassador of this great genius: they set out to shed light on his work as well as the musical tradition of Leipzig, adapting both for the present day.
The ensemble has a longstanding relationship with the internationally renowned cellist Peter Bruns. CDs that have received great acclaim from critics worldwide and seminal concerts, such as their joint debut at the Musikverein in Vienna, are the fruits of this musical partnership – more than enough reason for the ensemble to appoint Bruns as their artistic director in 2014.
Shortly after its foundation, the Mendelssohn Kammerorchester began to be invited to important festivals such as the Leipzig Bachfest. The ensemble has performed widely, including tours to Switzerland, Turkey, and Spain, and made guest appearances in all major German concert halls such as the Kölner Philharmonie, the Stuttgarter Liederhalle, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, as well as at the Rheingau Musikfestival and the Musikfestspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Since its foundation, the ensemble has established many musical friendships with leading musical figures. Antje Weithaas, Reinhold Friedrich, David Orlowsky, and Dorothee Mields perform with the ensemble regularly.
