Juliane Banse

Juliane Banse received her first violin lessons at the age of 5. From the age of 15 onwards, she took singing lessons, first with Paul Steiner and later with Ruth Rohner (Opera House Zurich), with chamber music singer Brigitte Fassbaender and with Daphne Evangelatos (Music College Munich).
After making her debut as Pamina in the Harry Kupfer production at the Comical Opera in Berlin in 1989, she immediately received another invitation for the part of Ilia in Idomeneo. Juliane Banse appeared in the title role of Massenet's Manon in the new production at the German Opera Berlin and as Snow White in the opera of the same nameby Heinz Holliger, first performed in Zurich in 1998. She received sensational reviews in the international press for this part.
This versatile soprano is often found to appear on the concert stage, too. With Sinopoli, she recorded Berg's Seven Early Songs together with the Dresden Staatskapelle for Teldec. Other hightlights include concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, concerts with Pierre Boulez in Cleveland, with Lorin Maazel, an acclaimed tour of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Simon Rattle, featuring Mahler's Symphony No. 2, and lastly the Japan tour of the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Chailly featuring Mahler's Symphony No. 4.
In addition to all this, the singer has a special affection for lieder. Juliane Banse performed a recital together with Maurizio Pollini at the New York Carnegie Hall, singing Schubert lieder. Together with Helmut Deutsch, Wolfram Rieger or Andras Schiff, she is a regular guest at lieder evenings in the important centres for lieder in Europe, e.g. at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, at the Vienna Concert Hall or the London Wigmore Hall.
