Norbert Schuster

Initially, Norbert Schuster received piano and organ lessons. He later went on to study double bass at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden. He joined the Dresden Philharmonic as a double bass player in 1977 and has been a member of various chamber music ensembles. He studied viola da gamba with Siegfried Pank in Leipzig as well as orchestral conducting with Alexander von Brück in Dresden. Starting in 1988 he was a member of the Schütz Akademie under the baton of Howard Arman. Schuster is one of the co-founders and the director of the Ensemble Alte Musik Dresden and has been the director of the Cappella Sagittariana Dresden since its re-establishment in 2006. A founding member of the Dresdner Hofmusik Society as well as the Heinrich Schütz in Dresden Society, he is committed to the promotion of early music. He is a co-editor of the Sächsische Musiklandschaften im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert CD series, published by the label Raumklang. Besides serving as the artistic director of the Cappella Sagittariana Dresden he is an active double bass and viol player.
