Raimund Wippermann studied music education, church music, and choir direction at the Musikhochschule in Cologne and in Düsseldorf, and also studied Latin at the University of Cologne. He complemented his education with further studies at the music academy in Stockholm. Following numerous years as church musician in parishes at Oberwinter and Kaarst, he was appointed as Domkapellmeister at the Hohe Domkirche (Cathedral) in Essen in 1991. Raimund Wippermann has held a professorship in choir direction at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf since 1997, where he had already been tutoring students on this programme since 1990. As a professor, he focussed much of his work on his own group of students as well the tuition in choir direction for students of church music. He was appointed as rector of the institution in 2004. Raimund Wippermann is the artistic director of the chamber choir Cantemus, which he founded in order to perform demanding a cappella repertoire of all kinds to a high standard. Between 1995 and 2000, he was choir master at the Städtischer Musikverein zu Düsseldorf. With the chamber choir Cantemus, he was successful at the Deutscher Chorwettbewerb in Stuttgart in 1990, allowing him to become a scholar of the Deutscher Musikrat, and at the Deutscher Chorwettbewerb 2002 and 2010, he was awarded prizes with the Girls Choir of Essen Cathedral.
