Mädchenchor am Essener Dom

The Mädchenchor am Essener Dom (the Girls Choir of Essen Cathedral) was founded by the Cathedral’s director of music, Domkapellmeister Raimund Wippermann. Today, the ensemble has become a vital part of the Cathedral’s music-making and of the city’s cultural landscape. Together with the Cathedral Choir (Domchor) and the Boys Choir (Domsingknaben), the Girls Choir is responsible first and foremost for the musical provision at the major services on Sundays and feast days, and also performs in the Cathedral’s concert series. In 2001, the choir was awarded first prize in the girls choir category at the Landes-Chorwettbewerb in North-Rhine Westphalia; and in 2002, the ensemble participated in the sixth edition of the Deutscher Chorwettbewerb in Osnabrück, where the choir received a second prize. As the best of all participating choirs, the girls were victorious at the Landes-Chorwettbewerb in 2009, and achieved a first prize in the girls choir category at the eighth edition of the Deutscher Chorwettbewerb, as well as a special prize for their exceptional performance of a contemporary choral work, ‘Triumf att finnas till’ by the Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist.
