Marcus Ullmann

Marcus Ullmann
Marcus Ullmann’s initiation into the world of music was as a chorister with the Dresdner Kreuzchor. He went on to study first with Hartmut Zabel and Margret Trappe Wiel at the Dresden Academy of Music and later with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin. Upon completion of his studies, he accepted roles in opera productions throughout Germany, while at the same time accepting engagements for both concerts and recitals of lieder – a genre that came to play an increasingly important role in his repertoire. His success as a lieder singer led to performances at the Salzburg Mozart Festival, the Schubertiade Feldkirch, the Festival Oude Musik Utrecht, the Settimane Bach in Milan, the Prague Spring, Dresden Music Festival, Bach Festival in Leipzig and Savonlinna Festival in Finnland. There, as elsewhere, he had a chance to perform with such renowned orchestras as the Washington Symphony Orchestra, Houston Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, Dresdner Staatskapelle, Munich Philharmonic, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra and many others besides. The conductors Marcus Ullmann has worked with include such great names as Helmuth Rilling, Leopold Hager, Frieder Bernius, Jesus Lopez Cobos, Sylvain Cambreling, Christoph Poppen, Marcus Creed, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Sir Neville Marriner, Kent Nagano, Karl-Friedrich Beringer, Ivor Bolton and, not least, Peter Schreier, with whom he has collaborated extensively on a number of projects. His countless CD recordings include Schubert’s Mass in A-flat major conducted by Peter Schreier, the Mozart Requiem under the baton of Frieder Bernius and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio conducted by Helmuth Rilling.
