Martin Petzold

Martin Petzold
The tenor Martin Petzold began his musical education as a choirboy in the St. Thomas’s Boys Choir in his home town of Leipzig. He has been a singer at the opera house in Leipzig since 1988 and in addition to his operatic activities, performs regularly not only with his old choir, but with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, MDR Orchestra, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Dresdner Kreuzchor and Monteverdi Choir Hamburg. Martin Petzold is regularly working together with conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Kurt Masur, Peter Schreier, Georg Christoph Biller, Ton Koopmann, David Timm, Hansjörg Albrecht and Herbert Wernicke. In 2001 he has been accorded the title of Kammersänger. Countless concert engagements have taken him all over the world, including to Europe’s most important festivals and to the USA, Israel, Japan and South America. Martin Petzold has several radio and television broadcasts and an extensive discography for such prestigious labels as Philips Classics, Decca, various Japanese labels and Apollon Classics to his name. In addition to a recording of “Die Zauberflöte” under the baton of Arnold Östman and “Das Wunder der Heliane” by Erich Korngold, for example, he also sang the part of the Evangelist in a recording of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the choir and in the church of St. Thomas’s in Leipzig. Martin Petzold also had a key role to play in many of the recordings made for Decca’s “Entartete Musik” series, including those with Lothar Zagrossek and John Mauceri.
