Hardly any other work presents such fascinating conundrums as the “Requiem” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) and one doesn’t even have to invoke the mysterious Grey Messenger who, according to legend, delivered the commission for the work. Mozart himself died while working on the piece and it was completed by his student, Franz Xaver Süssmayr. But one piece is missing; the “Amen” fugue after the “Lacrymosa” ends after 14 bars. For the Gutenberg Kammerchor under the direction of Prof. Felix Koch, his colleague Birger Petersen, Professor of Music Theory at the Mainz School of Music, has completed the section in the style and spirit of Mozart. The result is what Koch calls a convincing ‘Mainz version’ of the Mozart “Requiem”.
