Carl Loewe Herr Oluf and the Sea
Music from the Collection “Synagogue Chants”
Künstler: Assaf Levitin, Ivo Mrvelj, Leipziger Synagogalchor, Philipp Goldmann
Komponisten: Samuel Lampel

The new CD by the Leipziger Synagogalchor documents a part of Leipzig’s musical history that is largely unknown today. As cantor of the liberal community synagogue, Samuel Lampel (1884-1942) composed music for services, for prayers on Shabbat and on holidays. Due to the Shoah, his works fell into oblivion; now some of his compositions can be heard on CD for the first time. The Leipziger Synagogalchor recorded the songs for Shabbat together with cantor Assaf Levitin and organist Ivo Mrvelj in Leipzig’s Thomaskirche, just a few steps away from the former location of the synagogue in Gottschedstraße.
