David Erler and Martin Steuber present a selection of 21 festive songs for Advent and Christmas from Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen’s “Geist-reiches Gesang-Buch.” The recording, made at its historic location, the Freylinghausen Hall of the Francke Foundation in Halle, is based on the fourth edition of the hymnal from 1708. Freylinghausen’s legendary hymnal quickly became a bestseller; with its melodies for the latest Pietistic chants of the time, it laid the foundation for establishing Halle as the capital of new sacred singing.
