Performed for the first time in Hamburg in 1781, forgotten for 200 years, lost for 50, rediscovered in Kiev in 1999, and spectacularly performed again for the first time by the Windsbacher Knabenchor (Windsbach Boys Choir) in 2003: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s St Matthew Passion. This CD features the first ever recording of the composition. The grand acoustics of the Baroque church of St Gumbertus at Ansbach affords listeners a vivid experience of the Passion narrative. The church’s sound space and the flair of this live-recording transport the listener to the liturgical setting for which this Passion composition was intended.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion had already been rediscovered and performed by the Berlin Singakademie under the baton of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1829, bringing it back to public attention. The passion setting by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, too, had been held by the Singakademie since 1811. After the uprootings of World War II, however, the work was believed lost: the Soviet army had taken the musical treasure home with them. In 1999, Ukraine offically returned the work to Germany. The version reconstructed by Dr Ulrich Leisinger, and performed for the first time at the Ansbacher Bachwoche in 2003 by the Windsbacher Knabenchor (Windsbach Boys Choir), is therefore more than a mere cornerstone in the reception of Bach’s music.

In his Passion setting, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach brought together the works of numerous masters of the 17th century, creating a genial new work: a significant number of the choral sections were written by Johann Sebastian Bach, numerous arias are by Georg Benda, and the opening chorus was composed by Gottfried August Homilius. A must-have for the Bach connoisseur, and a great pleasure to the connoisseur of classical music!
