Gotthold Schwarz

Born in Zwickau in eastern Germany, the baritone Gotthold Schwarz began giving concerts even while still a student in Dresden and Leipzig and soon made a name for himself on the international circuit as a singer of both lieder and opera/ oratorio. He has sung in all Europe’s most important music-making centres, including at the Musikverein in Vienna and at the Salzburg Festival. In the USA, meanwhile, he has won widespread acclaim for both his recitals and his master classes devoted to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Gotthold Schwarz performs regularly with musicians and ensembles of international standing, such as with Philippe Herreweghe, Gustav Leonhardt, Frieder Bernius, Michael Schneider, Martin Haselböck, Michael Schönheit, the St. Thomas’s Boys Leipzig, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Dresdner Kreuzchor, Il Giardino Armonico and the Friedemann Immer Trumpet Ensemble. He also has several CD recordings and radio broadcasts to his name.
In recent years, Gotthold Schwarz has concentrated increasingly on the lieder genre, in which his repertoire extends from the Baroque era to contemporary composers.
